Someone has joined a new company and got the responsibility to deal with a new project. How can he/she handle it? What qualities does the project manager belong to? How can he/she complete a qualitative project in a specific time? What is the Code of Ethics guidelines for a project manager? Some qualities are discussed below which are very important to be a good project manager.
1)The capability of Leadership:
The first condition of this profession is to know how to lead the team effectively and efficiently. It doesn't mean that he/she can impose his/her own views on other team members forcefully. As he/she can tell the group members his/her own opinion according to proper time and situation, similarly, he/she can give weight to the opinion of all group members. Misunderstanding is the common thing in a time of doing work. It is the responsibility of a project manager to motivate each team member towards a specific job and enhance the overall teamwork.
In this relation, the managers can carry in their heads different theories related to leadership as 'The Behavior Approach' (Research study conducted at Ohio State University and University of Michigan), Fiedler's Contingency Theory, Path-Goal Theory, proposed by House and Mitchell, The Vroom-Yetton model.
The Behavior Approach explains that leadership quality can be judged on what they 'do' not on their 'trait'. The leadership effectiveness can be considered on their delegation to tasks, way of communication and motivation to the followers. Fiedler's Contingency Theory express three situational variables; leader-member relationship, task structure and leader's power of his position which affects the effectiveness of the leadership. The leaders have to know situational control. The Path-Goal Theory is another contingency model expresses that the leader's behavior would be the complements to the group members as would be inspired, motivated towards personal and organizational goal. The Vroom-Yetton Model expresses the behavior of the leader in terms of decision making.
2)Manage the Time:
From the beginning, a project manager can divide the whole project in few parts.He/she can make a proper plan when he/she can complete which part of the project and give proper direction to the team members. He/she can observe the work practically in a routinized form regarding the proper proceeding of work on time.
3)Keep Observation:
It is not expected that the project managers can get always the ideal situation or environment where he/she can give the command and all members can carry the command according to his/her advice without any obligation. Therefore, it is the duty of a project manager to keep attention to the individual problems of the group members. He/she also has to keep attention towards matters like- why is he becoming late at work? Is there any class in between the members? All things are to handle time and tackle the situation perfectly.
4)Control the Expense:
The idea is very good but practically the expense has crossed the estimated budget, this is not a good example of effective management of the project. So, from the beginning, the project managers would be conscious regarding of the expense of the scheduled project. He/she has to carry a clear concept from the beginning regarding the proper estimation of the cost. It is the great challenge of this work- how the project would be completed effectively comparing the cost-effectiveness.
5)Capability to Protect the Risk:
Repeated analysis of the project is the prior work of a project manager. If he/she spent more time thinking over the project from different angles and makes creative analysis, then the different sides of the project will come out clearly. In which situation- what types of problems will come; that will be very clear to him/her. So, to be an efficient project manager, he/she has to do inventive and creative work- leaving the traditional work.
6)Good Communicative Power:
Effective communication brings the solution smoothly. The project manager would be of a love-able character and keep a good relationship with all team members. He/she can make such a project work environment through his/her behavior where all members can make a spontaneous response to his/her one command. The project manager would have to be open-minded as all members can communicate at any time freely with him/her. As a result; if any time arises any problem, then and there it would be possible to precede the work making prompt solution.
7)Maintain the Quality of the Project:
The time limit is very important for a project. To maintain the specified time, the quality of the project would not be compromised. Because, if once an ineffective project is submitted, Management will loss reliability upon the project manager. That can make an obstacle in the career development of the project manager. So, repeated observation is needed before the submission of the project. Even, the project can be made checkup by an expert if it is required.
