A rose like little girl was born on 21 February, 1878, in Paris of France. Her name was given Mirra (Mirra Alfassa). She became known as Sree Ma, the spiritual Guru (Who dispels the darkness and takes towards light) to her disciples in future. She was very shy, quite and always used to absent minded from childhood. A sense of spirituality always surrounded her. One day her elder brother insulted her regarding her illiteracy. Returning home she took a book and started to learn letter paying her own effort. Then she admitted to school and stood first in every examination. In Spite of the barriers of examination, her mind was always dissolved in spiritual thoughts. She always felt that she had taken birth to complete the task assigned by the God in her living time. She saw in her mind's eye some glimpses of spirituality when she grew up within eleven to thirteen years. Many Ideals (Guru) used to come in her dream in sleeping time and preached many things. Mirra addressed one of the Gurus as “Lord Krishna”. She felt that one day she would meet that Krishna. Beside these, from those incidents the confidence came in her mind that India would be her future land of meditation. After that, long days had gone. Mirra recognized as Mirra Richard(1911). The name of her husband was Paul Richard. But Mira was continuously searching her Guru. At that time her husband Paul, the politician, planned to get elect to the French Senate from French controlled territory, Pondicherry. On 29th March,1914, Mirra came along with her husband, at Pondicherry and made an appointment with Sri Aurobindo. Introducing to Sri Aurobindo, it seemed to her that he was her ‘Lord Krishna’, the Guru whom she saw in dream. She stayed at Pondicherry.  The revolutionary, Sri Aurobindo just came from Chandan Nagar to Pondicherry. Then there were no stress of Ashram.

In 1915, Paul was ordered to go back to Paris and Mirra also returned back with him. After few years, he went to Japan due to promote French trade there by official order and Mirra also went with him. After spending few years in Japan, Paul along with his wife came back to Pondicherry in 1020.

A supernatural incident was caused on 24th November. The followers were assembled at the veranda of Library House. They watched a miracle. Sri Aurobindo was sitting in contemplation and placed his right hand on the head of Mirra. Suddenly, a heavenly ray reflected from the sky. All present people felt high pressure. All were astonished. Sree Aurobindo disappeared and only Mirra was sitting prominently.

Sri Aurobindo started an integral  yoga ashram at Pondicherry. Mira also joined there and started to live permanently at Pondicherry. She was not accepted by other inmates of the ashram. She was considered as outsider. Sri Aurobinda considered her to participate in yoga practice. He started to call her as 'Mother'. Gradually all inmates began to accept her. She transformed from Mira Alfassa to universal Mother- 'Shree Ma'. Sree Ma took the responsibilities of day to day activities of the ashram in 1924. From 1926, she took the whole responsibility of regular activity of the ashram due to Sri Aurobindo's retirement. Shree Ma established Sri Aurobindo on the place of Guru in her heart. Her own place was at the feet of Sri Aurobindo. That time Paul Richard and Shree Ma lived together at Pondicherry. The day 24th November,1926 was regarded as 'Siddhi day' and till now it is observed by the devotees of Sri Aurobindo.

Sree ma started a school with twenty  students there on 2nd December,1943. She started a quarterly magazine, named 'The Bulletin' in 1949. After death of Sri Aurobindo on 5th December,1950, Sree Ma took the full responsibilities of the Ashram and the followers. Shree Ma was recognized as Ashram Mother among the disciples. She also took the responsibility of rumination and dealing of external life of all. On 15th August, 1954, Pondicherry came under the territory of India. She started to teach French at ashram. She gave full structure of the Ashram establishing a university. The Auroville is an international educational center. Shree Ma continuously stayed at Pondicherry for fifty three years. She died on 17th November, 1973, at the age of ninety six. She was buried by the side of Sri Aurobindo.
